Manaus was known as Manaós before 1939 and before that as Barra do Rio Negro. It is the capital city of the state of Amazonas in the North Region of Brazil. It is located near the confluence of the Negro and Solimões rivers. It has more than 2 million population and is the most populous city of both the Brazilian state of Amazonas and the Amazon rainforest.

In 1669, the city was found and known as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro. It gradually transformed into a town in 1832. The name of ‘Manaus’ comes from an altered spelling of the native Manaós people. It was legally changed into a city on October 24, 1848, with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro in Portuguese which means ‘The City of the Margins of the Black River’. However, on September 4, 1856 it retained its original name.

Manaus is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The city can be accessed mainly by boat or airplane. It is renowned for its natural environment and culture. It is known by other names too like ‘Heart of the Amazon’ or ‘City of the Forest’.
