Avianca Airlines History

Avianca Airlines was conceived in December of 1919. It was founded by a group of Columbia and German nationals and first operated under the name SCADTA and under the leadership of Colombians Ernesto Cortissoz who was president. The airline began its operations by transporting mail but, expanded rapidly and was already servicing international flights by the 1920s. In mid-1940, the airline merged with SACO which was then Columbian’s national carrier. The resulting company was named Avianca Airlines and still is to date. The airline’s holding company is called Avianca Airlines Holdings.

Avianca Airlines has a total of 173 airplanes in its fleet. Of all these, only five are Boeings. The majority are 57 Airbus A320-200s and 34 Airbus A319-100. Apart from Airbus planes, the fleet also consists of ATR 72-600s, ATR 42s, Cessna208s and Embraer 190s. The airline has an astonishing order of 133 Airbus A320neo and 10 350-900s for which delivery will begin in 2018. Notable facts about the airline’s fleet is that it is the only other apart from British Airways which operates every variant of the Airbus A320 family.
